Penland Visiting Artist

Today I got to be a visiting artist up at Penland for Gay Smith's class. They are wrapping up the last few days of the clay concentration (a two month course at Penland.) Gay invited me to do a demonstration of my reed handles. I demonstrated one that I do on a vase and another one on a jar. It was a fun experience and a great honor to be invited! They were getting ready for a class pottery sale and there were great pots all around that they had salt or soda fired during the course. It was a fun morning!

Photography

I've been busy shooting new images of a lot of my work these days. I love getting behind the camera to see these details; sometimes that's when I really see the pots for the first time. I always choose out the best from each firing so I can photograph them for upcoming show applications, for the website, or for my online pottery shop. It seems so hard to convey the texture and subtle variation of wood fired pots within a photograph. I've been trying some different approaches to get a more dramatically lit shot. Soon I will be adding a lot of mugs I've been holding back for an online Mug Sale I'm having this weekend at my Etsy shop on Saturday, November 20 at 10 am.

Business

Getting official these days. I've been working on these line sheets of all of the work I make, as well as a wholesale price list for galleries. Having these things organized is helpful for galleries to see what you offer. I'm always seeking out new galleries to sell my work. I mostly have my work in the North Carolina area, but am hoping to broaden my exposure in other galleries in farther regions. Every little bit helps..with some photography skills and newly learned Photoshop skills, I thought these sheets looked pretty sharp!

Where am I?

Where are you, you might ask. I've been busy in-between shows, in-between firings and a making cycle, and just doing all of the other million things a self employed artist has to do. I also notice with this studio change that I made last summer, (that I still feel like I'm settling into), my blogging has slowed down a bit. I'm still here and full of my usual energy, but sometimes not sharing as much as I used to. The main reason is because I'm trying to keep 'business' at my studio and office, and separate it from my relaxing, home time. The effect of this means I don't journal here as much, and the posts have been quicker, and maybe not as personal. I often struggle with just how personal this blog is. I sometimes want to say a lot more, especially in regard to the roller coaster of an artist's life, but usually I just try to keep things on the positive and inspiring side. I do not see the point of putting negative energy out there for everyone to read. In fact, one of the main reasons I started this blog was for me to journal my own observations and inspirations. I never realized that it in turn would become something others wanted to read and be inspired by.

But, please stay tuned; I will still keep in touch. I also love to hear from you when I do show up!

On the road

I'm off to the show- come see me at the WNC Pottery Festival in Dillsboro, this Saturday, November 6, 10-4. Snow or shine, we will be there. And I will be selling warm-looking pots from the wood kiln.

Hope to see you,

Shuffling

I've been enjoying the lingering fall. Yesterday I went on a hike in the woods in yet another discovered new area practically in my backyard: Wilson Creek in the Grandfather mountain area off the Parkway. I did a lot of shuffling with my feet in the blanket of leaves all over the trail. I love that sound of those dry leaves.

Speaking of sound, I watched an amazing documentary the other night, called Touch the Sound, about the life of Evelyn Glennie, a solo percussionist who happens to be deaf. I highly recommend it.
